A survey conducted by pet food ingredient supplier BENEO in August 2023 among 2,500 dog and cat owners from various countries revealed the impact of inflation on pet food purchasing decisions. Nearly 90% of respondents noted a rise in pet food prices over the past year, with 1 in 6 switching to cheaper brands. Despite price concerns, pet owners prioritize ingredient quality, nutritional value, taste, and health claims when buying pet food. More than half are willing to pay extra for health-promoting ingredients with empirical evidence.

The survey highlights a growing awareness among pet owners about the link between digestive health and overall well-being in pets. Marketing claims related to digestive health, such as “promotes digestive health naturally” and “easy-to-digest,” were found to be influential. In addition, protein quality, sustainability, and the use of plant-based proteins are significant considerations for pet owners in their purchasing decisions, indicating a shift towards more health-conscious and environmentally friendly pet food choices.
