Mat-Su College is launching Alaska’s first Veterinary technician degree program to address the state’s shortage of animal care workers. Scheduled to begin in September, the program aims to fill the gap in Veterinary technicians, a critical role akin to animal nurses. Nationwide, there’s a shortage of 59,000 vet techs, with Alaska, including densely populated areas like Mat-Su, facing difficulties in recruitment.
The new program, a partnership with the University of Alaska Anchorage, will run for 2.5 years and accept 16 students. It will provide hands-on training, critical for animal care learning. The curriculum includes rotations at Matanuska-Susitna Borough animal shelter, offering practical experience. Successful graduates will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and be eligible for licensing exams. State officials anticipate improved Veterinary services and better customer experiences with increased trained vet techs. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand and enhance animal care across Alaska.
