Smithfield Foods donated over 38,000 pounds of protein to support veterans and families facing food insecurity in Geary County, Kansas. Collaborating with Feeding America’s Kansas Food Bank and Geary County Food Pantry, Smithfield’s donation aims to provide more than 150,000 protein servings, including bacon, sausage, ham steaks, hot dogs, and various sandwich meats.
The donation was announced during the Armed Forces Day Celebration on May 18, near Fort Riley in Junction City, Kansas, an area with high child and overall food insecurity rates. Steve Evans, Smithfield’s VP of Community Development, emphasized the company’s mission to combat hunger, especially among military families. Isreal Waddell, director of the Military Affairs Council, expressed gratitude for Smithfield’s significant impact on the community. Since 2008, Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes program has donated hundreds of millions of protein servings across the U.S., Poland, Romania, and Mexico, with a goal of 200 million servings by 2025.
