Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have identified stable flies (Stomoxys) as carriers of bacteria causing bovine mastitis, a costly disease for dairy farms. Published in the journal mSphere, the study shows these flies carry pathogenic bacteria, likely acquired from cow manure.

The flies’ microbiota, enriched with bacteria from manure, includes mastitis-associated taxa like Staphylococcus and Enterobacteriaceae. The study highlights the significant role of barn flies in spreading mastitis-causing bacteria, suggesting further research is needed to understand the transmission mechanisms and develop preventive strategies.
