The FDA has approved a 3-year expiration date for ropinirole ophthalmic solution (Clevor; Vetoquinol) when stored in its original packaging, extending its previous expiration by 12 months. This solution, indicated to induce vomiting in dogs, is the first and only FDA-approved product for this purpose. It is administered via eye drops, providing a less stressful, injection-free process for dogs and veterinary professionals.

Erik Zager, DVM, DACVECC, noted the solution’s reversal capability with metoclopramide, essential for subsequent treatments like activated charcoal. The solution induces vomiting within 20-30 minutes, with the option for a second dose if necessary. The extension follows extensive product stability testing, with no changes to the formulation. Veterinary clinics with Clevor lot number EM099 can now use the product for an additional 12 months. Zager emphasized the importance of adopting FDA-approved products in Veterinary practice to stay current and improve patient care, moving away from older methods like syrup of ipecac and apomorphine.
