Changing your personal brand is no small feat. It’s like trying to convince everyone you know that you’ve swapped your old, reliable Toyota for a flashy new Tesla—exciting, but a bit daunting.
As someone who started in public relations and was known as the high-energy communicator in Veterinary medicine, my passion for this profession has enabled my focus and passions have evolved significantly, leading me from working for others to becoming an entrepreneur. Here’s how I have and am still navigating this transformation as a guide for how you can change your personal brand, too.
- Self-Assessment: Understanding Your Current Brand
Before making any changes, you need to know where you currently stand. Picture yourself in front of the mirror (or maybe a very honest friend) and ask:
- What are my core values? (For me, it’s about leaving the world better than I found it. However, sometimes my approach can be a bit of a “bull in a China shop.”)
- What skills and experiences set me apart? (An endless supply of energy and no fear to jump in on tough projects)
- How do others currently perceive me? (I am still a go-to person for PR crises, direct, talker.)
- What do I want to be known for? (Creator of sustainable solutions, entrepreneur and Veterinary cheerleader)
- Define Your New Personal Brand
Now that you’ve assessed your current brand, it’s time to define your new one. It’s like deciding whether to wear the bold pink power suit or the comfy cat sweater. (Or both—who says you can’t mix things up?)
- Set Clear Goals: What do you want to achieve with your new brand? For me, it was moving from PR pro to innovative Veterinary entrepreneur.
- Identify Your Target Audience: Who do you want to reach? Is it the engine of the profession, industry influencers, executives?
- Craft Your Brand Message: Develop a clear, compelling message. Mine? “From high-energy PR pro to passionate Veterinary entrepreneur, creating solutions and cheering on the profession.”
- Update Your Online Presence
In the digital age, your online presence is your brand’s storefront. Make sure it reflects your new direction—and that your LinkedIn photo doesn’t still feature that questionable haircut from 2010.
- Revamp Your LinkedIn Profile: Update your headline, summary, and experience sections. Keywords are your friends here, so use them wisely.
- Refresh Social Media Profiles: Ensure your X, Instagram, and other profiles scream what you want to be known for.
- Create and Share Relevant Content
Content is king (or queen or the reigning monarch of your choice). Share insights, experiences, and expertise related to your new brand direction. It’s like giving people a sneak-peek behind the curtain of your fabulous new show.
- Network with Intent
Building and nurturing relationships is key to any successful brand. Attend industry events, join professional groups, and connect with influencers. Networking is like speed dating for your career—be genuine, be memorable, and maybe leave the business card juggling act at home.
- Seek Feedback and Adapt
As you transition to your new personal brand, seek feedback from trusted peers, mentors, and colleagues. This can provide valuable insights and help you fine-tune your brand. Be open to constructive criticism (even if it stings a bit) and be prepared to make adjustments.
- Stay Consistent and Authentic
Consistency and authenticity are the cornerstones of a strong personal brand. Ensure that your message and actions align with your brand values across all platforms and interactions. Authenticity builds trust and credibility, making it easier for others to connect with and support your brand. Plus, it’s way easier to remember your story when it’s actually true!
Changing your personal brand can be challenging but worthwhile. Embrace the journey and enjoy the process of creating a brand that truly represents who you are and where you want to go. Remember, your personal brand is like your favorite pair of jeans—it should evolve and fit you perfectly, no matter how many times life throws you in the wash.
