The Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board in Wyoming has introduced an open-source Instagram filter designed to help tourists maintain a safe distance from wildlife when taking photos. This tool, called the Selfie Control filter, allows users to gauge their proximity to animals by aligning an animal’s outline in the filter with its real-life counterpart. If the actual animal appears larger than the icon, visitors are too close and should move back.
The filter supports guidelines for keeping safe distances from wildlife, such as maintaining at least 100 yards from bears and 25 yards from moose. This initiative aims to reduce incidents and accidents involving tourists and wildlife, a concern highlighted by past events, including a recent injury involving a bison at Yellowstone National Park. The board has made the filter open-source, enabling other wildlife destinations to adopt and customize it to enhance visitor safety and wildlife protection.
