NBCUniversal’s Clear the Shelters campaign aims to promote pet adoption by reducing or waiving fees, countering the misconception that such practices devalue pets or lead to higher return rates. Studies, including research by the ASPCA and Maddie’s Fund, show that pets adopted with reduced or waived fees are just as likely to remain in their new homes and be valued by their adopters as those adopted with full fees.

The ASPCA study found a 50% increase in cat adoptions with waived fees, while the Maddie’s Fund study revealed lower-than-average return rates. Dr. Josh Fisher, Director of CMPD Animal Care and Control, emphasized that waived fees help new owners allocate funds toward initial care and other necessary expenses. The Best Friends Network highlighted that a conversation-based adoption process is key to positive outcomes. CMPD ACC seeks sponsors to help cover fees, allowing more pets to find homes.
