Nebraska health officials are investigating a potential rabies-related death in the western part of the state. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD) are identifying community members who may have been in contact with the infected individual to assess exposure risk and provide post-exposure prophylaxis if necessary. Although the risk to the public at large is considered low, rabies is a serious viral disease with a high mortality rate, spread through bites or scratches from an infected individual.
Health officials advise responsible pet ownership, including keeping animal vaccinations up to date, seeking Veterinary care if pets are exposed to wild or stray animals, avoiding contact with wild animals, and washing any bites or scratches immediately. Immediate medical care should be sought after any potential rabies exposure. These preventive measures help reduce the risk of rabies transmission.
