The Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team (VET) was deployed by the Texas Division of Emergency Management in response to Hurricane Helene, which severely impacted Southern states, particularly North Carolina. VET’s mission is to support search and rescue dogs working in hazardous conditions, such as rough terrain and floodwaters.
Led by Dr. Deb Zoran, VET ensures these highly trained dogs remain healthy and able to perform critical search operations. The team, which includes 12 members and Disaster Assessment and Recovery agents from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, uses decontamination techniques to protect both dogs and handlers. This marks VET’s second East Coast deployment and its first in North Carolina.
