Washington State University Spanish professor Sonia Lopez-Lopez has been teaching Veterinary students Spanish for 12 years, addressing the communication challenges faced by Spanish-speaking clients in Veterinary clinics. Drawing from her own experiences with language barriers, Lopez-Lopez created a two-part course, Beginners and Intermediate Veterinary Spanish, designed to equip future veterinarians with the skills to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking clients.

The course emphasizes practical phrases and vocabulary relevant to Veterinary medicine, helping students build confidence in handling client interactions. In a profession where miscommunication can be detrimental, the course offers tools to improve patient care. Students also explore academic Spanish and current Veterinary research from the Hispanic world. The course is highly flexible, accommodating students’ busy schedules, and available to both WSU and regional Veterinary students. Lopez-Lopez, who earned her PhD in Language Literacy and Technology, finds great joy in teaching the course and witnessing her students’ growth.
