At the Fetch dvm360 Conference, Walter L. Brown Jr, BS, RVTg, VTS (ECC), discussed the crucial role of nutritional support in the recovery of critically ill Veterinary patients. Brown highlighted that many critical care patients suffer from malnutrition, which negatively impacts their recovery. He emphasized the importance of preserving lean muscle mass, as critically ill animals tend to catabolize muscle rather than fat, leading to a negative protein balance. Nutritional intervention becomes urgent after three days of anorexia, with careful patient selection, a sound nutrition plan, and consistent monitoring being key to success.
Brown advised Veterinary professionals to focus on stabilizing patients and addressing underlying health issues before beginning gradual feeding. He recommended calculating the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) as a baseline and adjusting protein intake based on species-specific needs. Proper monitoring, including tracking body weight and gastrointestinal health, is essential to ensuring the success of nutritional support in critical care patients.
