Thanksgiving is a joyful holiday, but it also poses potential hazards for pets. To keep them safe, avoid feeding them fatty foods, poultry bones, or holiday sweets, as these can cause digestive issues or toxicity. Plain, boneless, and skinless turkey is safe in small amounts, but foods like onions, raisins, chocolate, and xylitol are harmful, and uncooked dough can be dangerous. Dispose of turkey carcasses and food scraps securely to prevent access. Decorations, including toxic plants like amaryllis and hydrangeas or items like corn cobs and pine cones, should be kept out of reach, as they can cause choking or blockages.
If hosting guests, secure nervous pets in a separate room to reduce stress and prevent escapes. Ensure pets have proper identification, like a microchip, in case they get out. For travel, use secure carriers or harnesses and check health certificate requirements for your destination. Proper preparation will ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone.
