Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global challenge affecting human, animal, plant, and environmental health. It occurs when microorganisms develop resistance to antimicrobial drugs, threatening the effectiveness of treatments. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) leads efforts to combat AMR through a One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health sectors.
WOAH’s initiatives include monitoring antimicrobial use via its ANIMUSE database, developing biosecurity guidelines, and promoting the responsible use of antimicrobials. Collaboration with global organizations like WHO, FAO, and UNEP enhances these efforts. Preventive measures, such as improving farm hygiene and access to vaccines, are emphasized to reduce the need for antimicrobials. WOAH also focuses on raising awareness, supporting low- and middle-income countries in creating national AMR action plans, and cultivating innovation for alternatives to antibiotics. Tackling AMR requires collective action from governments, farmers, veterinarians, and individuals to ensure sustainable solutions and a healthier future.
