A devastating avian flu outbreak has claimed the lives of 20 large cats at the Wild Felid Advocacy Center, a nonprofit sanctuary on Harstine Island, Mason County. Starting with the first case in late November, the virus has reduced the sanctuary’s population from 37 to 17 cats. One remains in critical condition, four are recovering, and 12 show no symptoms. The sanctuary is under quarantine, requiring staff to wear PPE, and has incurred $20,000–$30,000 in damages so far, with costs expected to reach $150,000.

Experts, including Washington State Veterinarian Dr. Amber Itle, attribute the infections to contaminated carcasses or meat products, as cats are highly susceptible to avian influenza. The sanctuary, now closed to visitors, hopes to reopen in spring and is seeking community donations to offset financial burdens. Officials report no evidence of mammal-to-mammal or human transmission of the virus, which has been present in Washington for nearly three years.
