Feline Acquired Skin Fragility Syndrome (FASFS) is a rare and severe dermatologic condition linked to systemic diseases, primarily in middle-aged to older cats. During a lecture at the New York Vet Show, Dr. Andrew Rosenberg highlighted the syndrome as a dramatic manifestation of conditions such as Cushing’s disease, diabetes mellitus, liver disease, and excessive use of steroids or progestational compounds. FASFS causes the skin to become extremely fragile, thin, and prone to tearing with minimal trauma, often accompanied by bruising and spontaneous wounds.
Diagnosis relies on clinical signs, patient history, and tests for underlying conditions like hypercortisolism and diabetes. Treatment focuses on addressing the root cause, but prognosis is typically poor due to the advanced stage of associated diseases. Wound management is challenging due to the skin’s fragility. Rosenberg emphasized the importance of recognizing this syndrome early to understand its origins and differentiate it from other conditions like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
