Sawyer, a 6-year-old golden retriever from South Carolina, endured a serious health crisis after ingesting diaper cream containing zinc oxide, paired with hundreds of hair ties accumulated over years. Initially, his vomiting was attributed to the cream, which led veterinarians to recommend home monitoring. However, persistent symptoms prompted further investigation, revealing the presence of hair ties in his stomach. Surgery removed the foreign objects, but the zinc oxide adhered to the ties had already caused severe poisoning.
Sawyer experienced red blood cell destruction, leading to anemia and requiring two blood transfusions. The poisoning persisted because the cream remained in his stomach for days, allowing zinc absorption. Although zinc poisoning from diaper cream is rare, the prolonged presence of foreign objects exacerbated the issue. After battling anemia and an incision infection, Sawyer recovered fully. His story underscores the risks of ingesting non-food items and the importance of prompt Veterinary care for pets.
