AI technology in pet food formulation is still in its early stages, according to Ian Mealey, product marketing director at Format Solutions. While adoption has been slow, AI shows potential in areas such as optimizing ingredient quality, cost, and availability, ensuring compliance with market regulations, and capturing feedback on product performance. For example, AI could alert developers when ingredient variations exceed acceptable limits, automate compliance checks, or identify problematic ingredient combinations based on past experiences.
In addition, it might aid in recognizing new product opportunities through iterative recipe development. However, Mealey emphasizes that AI is unlikely to replace human expertise entirely due to the complexities and risks involved in formulation. Current software solutions already address many challenges effectively, and AI may serve more as a tool for automation and knowledge enhancement rather than a standalone replacement. The future role of AI will depend on its ability to complement existing tools and processes.
