The human-animal bond offers numerous health benefits, including reduced anxiety, lower blood pressure, and improved mental health, and has been studied extensively in relation to dogs and cats. However, a new UK study, supported by HABRI, aims to explore the bond between humans and smaller pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, and rodents, a less-researched area. Researchers will examine the physical and psychological well-being of owners who adopt these pets from shelters, aiming to guide adoption practices and support.
The study involves two parts: in-depth interviews with 30 pet owners and a longitudinal study of 450 adopters, with follow-ups at 1, 3, and 6 months. Investigators anticipate positive health outcomes and insights into the unique connections between owners and small pets. HABRI also supports broader research on the human-animal bond’s impact on health and well-being, including innovative studies using artificial intelligence to analyze longitudinal data.
