The FDA has issued warning letters to six companies selling unapproved drugs claiming to treat seizures in dogs and cats. These products, available online and lacking FDA approval or veterinary oversight, have not been evaluated for safety or effectiveness. The companies, including Nutrition StrengthEvolution Pets, and Doc Ackerman’s Pet Products, have 15 days to respond or face potential legal action, such as product seizures or court orders.

Unapproved seizure treatments pose risks, as managing such conditions requires a licensed veterinarian’s expertise. Seizures in pets can result from genetic disorders, trauma, or diseases like epilepsy, which affects 1-5% of dogs. The FDA emphasizes that only FDA-approved or conditionally approved drugs, such as KBroVet-CA1 and Fidoquel-CA1 for idiopathic epilepsy, should be used. Pet owners using these unapproved drugs are urged to consult a veterinarian for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Adverse events should be reported to the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine.
