A recent survey by the United Soybean Board (USB) has highlighted shifting consumer preferences in animal protein purchases, especially pork products. The survey found that 70% of respondents now consider the animal’s diet when buying meat, compared to 51% in 2019. Those who prefer soy-fed meat cite reasons such as better health, higher quality, greater nutrition, and improved taste. The survey also reveals that consumers are purchasing pork more frequently, with 41% buying it at least weekly. Furthermore, 77% are more likely to purchase meat if it’s raised and fed by U.S. farmers, and 88% prefer meat from animals born, bred, and raised in the U.S.
Consumers pay significant attention to food labels, particularly those indicating humane raising and nutritious diets, with 96% taking note. In addition, 65% of consumers prefer meat not fed synthetic ingredients, which benefits U.S. soybean meal as a natural feed ingredient. The survey emphasizes the growing importance of label transparency and factual information in influencing consumer behavior. The findings are based on a survey of over 2,000 U.S. adults, representing various age groups.
