At the 2026 AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference, Latonia Craig, EdD, Chief of Veterinary Engagement and Belonging, emphasized that inclusivity and belonging must be intentional and foundational in Veterinary medicine despite the profession’s fast pace. Speaking during the session “Making Your Mark: The Belonging and Engagement Learning Café,” Craig urged leaders to “operationalize” belonging by embedding it into daily workplace practices. She noted that when employees feel seen and valued, loyalty, engagement, and retention improve.
Participants echoed these themes, with practice owner Dr. Jon David Johnson describing how mindful leadership and emotional awareness can positively influence team culture. Panelists and attendees discussed how belonging is often deprioritized during busy periods, even though it is essential for learning, wellbeing, and performance. Vicki Weber of Clemson University highlighted that without a sense of belonging, students and staff struggle to thrive. Craig recommended regular check-ins and “stay interviews” to proactively address challenges and sustain a healthy, inclusive workplace culture.
