Mission Animal Hospital near Minneapolis has established a successful work-study partnership with Cristo Rey Jesuit High School–Twin Cities, contributing to the Veterinary profession’s diversity and youth engagement. Proposed by the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Action Team, the program aims to increase representation in Veterinary medicine by involving students from diverse backgrounds.

The Cristo Rey–Twin Cities students, predominantly Hispanic, African American, and multiracial, with limited financial resources, were well-suited for this initiative. Four high school students participated, gaining hands-on experience in Veterinary practices, including patient history-taking and communication with clients. Mission Animal Hospital’s efforts align with DEI goals, fostering a more diverse Veterinary workforce capable of offering compassionate, culturally sensitive care to pets and owners. The initiative won the MVMA’s “Best in Business” award for the partnership’s impact.
