A study by the Croney Research Group, presented by Kayla Pasteur at the 2024 AVMA Conference, identified a significant gap in scientific literature concerning the impact of access to Veterinary care on animal welfare, particularly regarding behavior. Only 17% of publications reviewed examined this impact, and just 13% provided definitions of “access to Veterinary care.” Key barriers identified included economic limitations, geographic location, and client-veterinarian relationships.

The study revealed that barriers such as transportation, language, and mental health issues are understudied. It emphasized the need for a comprehensive understanding of access to care, which varies by socio-economic status, region, and age. The research reviewed 1,044 publications, of which 77 met the criteria, highlighting a lack of a formal definition for “access to Veterinary care.” The findings call for further investigation into understudied barriers and differences in perceptions between providers and clients.
