The AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) has urged the AVMA Board of Directors to prioritize resources supporting veterinarians in rural practices. Their goal is to improve recruitment and retention by leveraging data-driven resources, partnering with other professional organizations, and addressing challenges unique to rural Veterinary work.

During the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference in January, delegates highlighted rural veterinarians as vital to animal health, food safety, and public health. However, they face difficulties such as limited diagnostic tools, long hours, lower salaries, and professional isolation. Women in rural practice also encounter safety concerns and workplace challenges.

To support rural veterinarians, delegates proposed strategies including student mentorship, loan repayment programs, and the use of emerging technologies like telemedicine and AI. The motion passed with strong support, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to sustain rural Veterinary careers. AVMA will explore models from other health fields to develop effective retention programs.
