Honey bees, often considered wildlife, face similar issues to food production animals, including antimicrobial resistance and health concerns. Dr. Kaitlyn Krebs, a bee veterinarian and beekeeper, emphasizes the need for veterinarians to learn about honey bee care, an emerging field in Veterinary medicine. A 2017 federal rule requiring Veterinary prescriptions for certain antimicrobials in bees has increased collaboration between veterinarians and beekeepers.
Dr. Krebs presented on bee health at the AVMA Convention 2024, highlighting key aspects of hive inspections and the importance of understanding bee biology, health, and diseases. She discussed the challenges of treating diseases like European and American foulbrood, which require specific antimicrobials and, in severe cases, hive destruction. A new vaccine for American foulbrood offers hope but is not yet widely available. Dr. Krebs advises veterinarians to gain experience through education, shadowing beekeepers, or starting their own hives, promoting a One Health approach to Veterinary practice.
