Cal Poly animal science students in the Veterinary Community Service Enterprise course run “Doggy Days” clinics, offering free Veterinary care to pets of homeless and low-income individuals in San Luis Obispo County. These student-led clinics, held three to four times per quarter, provide basic Veterinary services, including vaccinations, exams, and nail trims, without the need for appointments.
Assistant Professor Laura Backus, who oversees the course, emphasizes the importance of accessible animal care for those who may otherwise struggle with costs. Locations are chosen strategically to align with other outreach services, such as Shower the People, making it convenient for pet owners attending these services. Student manager Carolyn Mount highlights that Doggy Days gives pre-vet students crucial hands-on experience with small animals, filling a unique niche in their curriculum. Backus and Mount reflect on the powerful bond between clients and their pets, noting the deep care homeless individuals often show toward their animals.
