AVMA-funded research led by Cornell University is progressing into its second phase, aiming to help Veterinary practices better utilize their veterinary technicians’ skills. Practices are invited to participate in this study, which seeks to identify ways to enhance employee retention and operational efficiency. Participation requires team members, including managers, veterinarians, and technicians, to complete brief surveys from January 2025, taking only 1-2 hours per person over several months.

In exchange, participating practices will receive a report summarizing findings and offering tailored recommendations for engaging Veterinary technicians’ full skillset. The first research phase highlighted discrepancies, with some technicians reporting underuse of their skills and others handling tasks beyond their qualifications. Practices interested in participating should complete a survey by December 1, 2024, for valuable insights and to contribute to a broader effort in improving technician engagement. Questions can be directed to AVMA Chief Economist Katelyn McCullock.
