Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is set to expand and upgrade its facilities with a $19.5 million capital investment. The Animal Health Diagnostic Center and the New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory are crucial for diagnosing animal diseases and ensuring public health, as they help identify and manage diseases that can affect both animals and humans. Dean Lorin Warnick highlighted the importance of these facilities in controlling diseases and supporting food safety. The laboratory, which employs about 250 faculty and staff, includes 12 specialized testing labs for various diseases and conditions.

Francois Elvinger, Executive Director for AHDC and NYS Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, emphasized their role in detecting diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza and SARS-CoV-2. The labs played a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic by testing both animal and human samples. The expansion, supported by an additional $10 million from Cornell, will add 2,600 square feet for new labs and administrative spaces, accommodating the growing demand for diagnostic services.
