The AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) had an eventful year, accrediting over 200 Veterinary technology programs, updating accreditation standards, and publishing statistics. In 2023, 5,162 veterinary technicians graduated from CVTEA-accredited programs, with 33,590 students enrolled for 2023-24. Two new programs, at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College and Appalachian State University, received accreditation in 2024, while Mildred Elley College applied. Currently, 218 programs are accredited, with 68% fully accredited, 12% initially accredited, 19% on probation, and 1% on voluntary terminal accreditation. Nine programs are seeking initial accreditation for 2025, while accreditation for three programs was withdrawn.
Updated standards, effective August 2024, include changes to terminology and requirements for program facilities, enhanced transparency about probationary accreditation, and adjustments to Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) reporting. Proposed changes to standards, skills, and outcomes assessment are open for public feedback until March 15, ahead of the April CVTEA meeting.
