A cyberattack at the Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center (SOVSC) temporarily shut down its urgent care services, limited emergency room operations, and resulted in the replacement of 30 devices. The breach occurred when staff discovered patient files locked by ransomware demanding payment. The center immediately shut down its networks, worked with a cybersecurity team to contain the attack, and utilized an external file storage system to access patient records.
Although no client payment information was compromised, the disruption caused extended wait times, patient referrals to other providers, and operational challenges. SOVSC director Craig Lassen described the attack as a “stress test” of their cybersecurity measures and emphasized the growing threat of cyberattacks in the medical field. The center plans to restore full functionality over the coming week while prioritizing care for high-risk patients. The incident highlights the critical importance of robust cybersecurity in healthcare settings.
