A Veterinary dentist recently helped treat Callee, an elephant at Sedgwick County Zoo, after he broke a tusk during a sparring match with another male elephant, Titan. The fight, witnessed by zoo visitors, left Callee’s tusk broken at the pulp cavity, causing bleeding and requiring immediate intervention to prevent infection and further damage.
Dr. Doug Winter, a board-certified veterinary dentist specializing in zoo and wildlife dentistry, performed a root canal on Callee’s damaged tusk. The zoo’s elephant care, maintenance, and Veterinary teams assisted in the successful procedure, and Callee is now recovering well. The timing of the event allowed members of the Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians, who were visiting the zoo, to observe the intricate dental work firsthand.
