The Denver Zoo is contributing to an innovative project to improve wildlife veterinary care through the creation of the Zoo and Aquarium Radiology Database (ZARD), the first online repository of diagnostic reference images for zoological species. This collaborative effort involves leading institutions like the Brookfield Zoo, Columbus Zoo, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, aiming to provide veterinarians with essential tools to identify normal and abnormal anatomy across diverse species.
With the Denver Zoo housing an on-site CT scanner, the initiative facilitates early disease diagnosis and enhances treatment capabilities for exotic animals like tortoises and lions. According to Dr. Jimmy Johnson, senior director of animal health at the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, ZARD functions as a “digital textbook” to deepen understanding of numerous species and improve patient care. This industry-wide resource underscores the power of advanced imaging technology in revolutionizing zoological medicine and facilitating collaboration for wildlife health advancements.
