Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is conducting research to improve understanding and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in dogs. Led by Dr. Matthew Wun, the study aims to identify the genetic factors contributing to IBD by comparing intestinal stem cells from healthy and affected dogs. IBD disrupts nutrient absorption, causing symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss, and often requires challenging management with immunosuppressive drugs.

The research uses lab-grown intestinal organoids to study gene expression differences between healthy and diseased cells. This approach hopes to uncover specific genetic deficiencies and lead to targeted therapies. Dogs participating in the study will receive a free gastrointestinal endoscopy and a $25 Amazon gift card. The research is funded by the Morris Animal Foundation and supported by grants in memory of a dog who suffered from IBD.
