Understanding a dog’s body language is essential for owners to interpret their emotions and needs, according to Harmony Diers from the Dog Aging Project at Texas A&M. Relaxed dogs display soft eyes, squinting, an open mouth, and circular tail wags, indicating happiness. They may also lean on their owner or roll over. Recognizing these signs helps owners ensure their pet is comfortable and secure.

Conversely, discomfort or stress is shown through pinned-back ears, tucked tails, stiff posture, and “whale eye” (showing the whites of their eyes). Dogs may shake off tension, turn their body away, or lick their lips when nervous. Some breed-specific traits, like a German shepherd’s naturally upright ears, should also be considered. In addition, health issues can manifest through lethargy, limping, tucked posture, or head-hanging. Lip-smacking may indicate nausea or stress. Understanding these signals helps owners advocate for their pets’ well-being and recognize when Veterinary care is needed.
