A new study by the University of California San Diego, published in PLOS ONE, investigates whether dogs understand words communicated through soundboards or buttons, a trend popularized on social media. The research explores five key questions, including whether dogs can recognize and respond to words recorded on soundboards, even without other contextual or owner cues, and if these responses are consistent across different settings.
It also examines whether dogs react to familiar words similarly to how they respond to recognized object names. According to Federico Rossano, a co-author of the study, the findings show that words matter to dogs; they respond to the words themselves rather than just associated cues. The study found dogs were more likely to exhibit play-related or outside-related behaviors corresponding to specific words but did not consistently display food-related behaviors, possibly due to satiation or the testing conditions.
