The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) will change its 17-year partnership with the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) by ending its memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the organization, effective October 1. Previously, the FDA provided scientific and technical support to AAFCO for reviewing new animal food ingredients. The FDA will now implement its internal review processes, focusing resources on FDA-driven programs.
Despite not renewing the MOU, the FDA will continue participating in AAFCO meetings to ensure animal food safety. The FDA plans to introduce the Animal Food Ingredient Consultation (AFIC) process to stay informed about new ingredients, address safety concerns, and engage the public in discussions. The FDA aims to finalize draft guidances #293 and #294 to outline enforcement policies and improve ingredient approval processes. Companies with concerns about the transition are encouraged to consult the FDA for guidance.
