The FDA has released documents addressing the transition following the expiration of its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) on October 1, 2024. Key documents include requests for public comments on the FDA’s animal food review processes, specifically regarding the Food Additive Petition (FAP) and GRAS Notification program. The comment period runs from August 9 to December 9, 2024.

Draft Guidance for Industry (GFI) #293 outlines the FDA’s enforcement policy, stating no action will be taken against unapproved ingredients if they are defined by AAFCO and not misleading. Draft GFI #294 introduces an interim Animal Food Ingredient Consultation (AFIC) process for firms to discuss new ingredients with the FDA. Comments on these guidances are due by September 9, 2024. The FDA will also host virtual stakeholder listening sessions to gather further input.
