Hurricane Helene left significant devastation across western North Carolina, including Asheville, and recovery efforts are ongoing months later. The Veterinary Management Group (VMG) stepped in to support affected communities during their fall meeting, initially planned before the storm. Led by AAHA Board President Dr. Scott Driever, VMG volunteers provided assistance at Swannanoa Valley Animal Hospital, helping with Veterinary care and facility maintenance to ease the workload on local staff.

Dr. Otto Sharp, the hospital’s owner, highlighted the challenges faced by his team and community, emphasizing the long recovery process. The volunteers’ efforts offered physical and mental relief to staff and clients, many of whom are still struggling with the storm’s aftermath. The region faces broader challenges, including damage to local businesses, tourism disruptions, and basic infrastructure issues, such as limited potable water. Despite these hardships, the resilience and optimism of the community, coupled with ongoing support, fuel hope for recovery and rebuilding.
