Lina Khan, Chair of the FTC, addressed the 2024 AVMA Veterinary Business and Economic Forum, focusing on litigation against noncompete agreements and the impact of the FTC’s new merger guidelines on the Veterinary industry. She emphasized the FTC’s concern over the negative effects of noncompetes on workers, including veterinarians, citing examples where these agreements hindered job opportunities and forced costly legal battles.

Khan also discussed growing consolidation in the Veterinary sector, highlighting concerns over private equity firms and serial acquisitions that could harm competition and quality. She touched on the FTC’s approach to artificial intelligence, warning of potential fraud, market monopolization, and privacy issues, particularly regarding surveillance pricing, where businesses use personal data to set individualized prices. Khan reiterated the FTC’s commitment to protecting competition and ensuring fair practices in the Veterinary industry, emphasizing ongoing litigation and investigations into these issues.
