The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is suing Tyson Foods for allegedly misleading consumers about its climate commitments, claiming the company has not provided meaningful plans to achieve its stated goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The lawsuit, filed in D.C. Superior Court, challenges Tyson’s marketing of “climate-friendly” beef, which is advertised as having 10% lower emissions than conventional beef.

Despite Tyson’s assertion that it produces 20% of the U.S. beef and aims to eliminate deforestation and increase renewable energy use, EWG contends that the company lacks a rigorous strategy to meet its net-zero target. Livestock production accounts for about 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with cattle contributing significantly. EWG’s legal representation includes Earthjustice, which emphasizes the importance of transparency for consumers regarding food choices and calls out the rise of misleading environmental claims, often termed “greenwashing.” Tyson has yet to respond to the allegations.
