Hill’s Pet Nutrition has released its 2024 State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report, highlighting increasing animal shelter intakes and declining adoption rates. According to Shelter Animals Count, 6.5 million cats and dogs entered shelters in 2023, with a 900,000 animal increase since January 2021. The report, based on insights from 2,500 pet owners, identifies financial concerns as the top barrier to pet adoption. Nearly 50% of respondents cited the overall cost of pet ownership, with 84% highlighting veterinary care as the most expensive aspect.

Income and housing restrictions also impact pet ownership, particularly for those earning less than $75,000. The report notes that large dogs are less likely to be adopted, although Gen Z shows a higher willingness to adopt them. Misconceptions about fostering and the need for post-adoption support are also discussed, with behavioral issues being a significant reason for pet relinquishment. Hill’s commitment to animal welfare includes providing $300 million in pet nutrition to over 1,000 shelters and supporting 14 million adoptions.
