Flop, a young penguin at the Dudley Zoo in England, has regained her ability to walk with help from the Toronto Zoo. After losing her mother shortly after birth and suffering neglect from her father, Flop developed a limp body and an inability to support herself earlier this year due to an infection. Though antibiotics cleared the infection, Flop’s mobility issues persisted.

Inspired by Flap, a penguin at the Toronto Zoo who overcame a similar condition using a baby-bouncer-like harness, Dudley Zoo staff sought advice from their Toronto counterparts. With their guidance, Flop underwent a rehabilitation process using a makeshift sling that reduced weight on her feet and allowed her to practice walking. Named in honor of Flap, Flop’s recovery represents a triumph of collaboration and innovation. Her progress not only brought relief to her caretakers, but also highlighted the far-reaching impact of creative rehabilitation techniques developed in zoos worldwide.
