Kansas State University veterinarians achieved a record number of service animal eye exams during the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists/Epicur Pharma National Service Animal Eye Exam event in May. The K-State Veterinary Health Center’s ophthalmology team, including professors Jessica Meekins and Amy Rankin, Veterinary nurse Jennifer Klingele, and Veterinary assistant Jordyn Orrison, examined 77 service and military dogs both at the center and off-site. Off-site visits included Kansas Specialty Dog Service, Sedgwick County Emergency Management Search and Rescue, Wichita Police Department, McConnell Air Force Base, and Fort Riley, with 13 dogs seen at Sedgwick County alone.

The exams focused on early detection of issues like redness, squinting, cloudy corneas, retinal disease, and cataracts. Shannon Jacobs of Sedgwick County Emergency Management emphasized the importance of eyesight for service dogs. Meekins expressed pride in providing this vital service, noting the increase in community awareness and participation. Registration for the 2025 event will open in April.
