Near Infrared (NIR) imaging technology could enable real-time capture of layer performance data, offering a non-invasive method to quantify fat pad weight in live birds. Currently, the layer industry relies on past performance data for nutritional program decisions, assuming future flocks will exhibit similar patterns. The conventional assessment of flock body condition through necropsies is limited in large flocks.

The proposed solution involves a cloud-based management tool utilizing handheld NIR scanners to measure fat pads up to 120 grams. The collected data is transferred to a cloud-based platform, allowing live production managers, veterinarians, and nutritionists to analyze performance data rapidly and make informed decisions to enhance flock health and nutrition. The technology is still in development, but the data management tool has been available for years.
