Cal Poly animal science students in the Veterinary Community Service Enterprise course provide free Veterinary care to pets of homeless and low-income individuals through Doggy Days clinics in San Luis Obispo County. Held three to four times per quarter at various locations, these pop-up clinics offer services like vaccinations, exams, and nail trims for cats and dogs. Assistant Professor Laura Backus, who oversees the course, highlights the community-centered approach, enabling students to interact with diverse clients and their pets.

Student manager Carolyn Mount explains that the clinics are strategically scheduled alongside other outreach services, like free showers for homeless individuals, making it convenient for pet owners to access care. Students, under Backus’ supervision, perform basic exams and administer vaccinations, gaining hands-on experience in small-animal care. Mount and Backus note the mutual bond shared between clients and their pets, emphasizing the essential support pets provide to their owners in challenging circumstances.
