Falcor, an 11-year-old white Bengal tiger rescued from the private zoo of “Tiger King” stars Jeff and Lauren Lowe, underwent groundbreaking eye surgery in Tuolumne County. After being relocated to the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary in San Andreas, a tumor was detected on his right eyelid. UC Davis Veterinary Medicine collaborated with PAWS to perform a photodynamic therapy, a cutting-edge laser surgery, in Falcor’s enclosure to minimize anesthesia time.
The procedure involved removing the tumor, injecting a photo-sensitive dye into the surgical site, and using a laser to activate the dye’s therapeutic properties, creating a protective scab to prevent infection and target remaining cancer cells. This innovative approach, typically used on horses, dogs, and cats, was a success. UC Davis and PAWS will continue to monitor Falcor’s recovery to ensure his well-being following the surgery.
