The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has approved a proposal from Kansas State University’s (KSU) Olathe Innovation Campus to oversee scientific reviews of new animal food ingredient submissions for AAFCO’s Official Publication. This initiative replaces the previous FDA-supported “Ingredient Definition Request” process, which ended after the expiration of an MOU between AAFCO and the FDA.

K-State Olathe will lead the new approval process, directed by Dr. Haley Larson, with a panel of academic and independent experts reviewing submissions. The goal is to create a streamlined and scientifically rigorous evaluation pathway that meets industry demands while ensuring safety.

AAFCO’s Official Publication is recognized globally and helps maintain uniform regulations for animal feed across U.S. states. This new pathway will also align with the FDA’s GRAS Notice program, offering an additional route for ingredient approval while ensuring compliance with industry standards.
