New U.S. regulations, effective August 1, aim to prevent the reintroduction of dog rabies by tightening entry rules for dogs. These rules require proof of health, age (at least six months), microchipping, and updated vaccination records, along with CDC Dog Import paperwork. Depending on the country of origin, a rabies vaccine and possibly a blood test are mandatory. Airlines like Lufthansa, American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta have responded by banning dogs on U.S.-bound flights or seeking rule extensions, citing concerns over unintended travel disruptions.

This has left military families, particularly those stationed in Europe, scrambling for alternatives. Liz Hensel, CEO of Leave No Paws Behind USA, highlights the challenge faced by over 100,000 service members abroad, stressing the need for better solutions to avoid stranding families and their pets. The CDC warns that non-compliant dogs will be returned to their departure country at the owner’s expense.
