Kentucky is experiencing a rapid spread of parvovirus (Parvo), a deadly virus affecting dogs, with the state ranking fifth in the U.S. for the number of cases. Parvo targets the canine intestinal tract and, in severe cases, the heart, causing symptoms such as dehydration, bloating, fever, loss of appetite, and bloody diarrhea. The virus spreads through contaminated fecal matter and can survive on surfaces, clothing, and kennels.

Brandon Taylor, operations manager of the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society, emphasizes the importance of quick Veterinary intervention, noting that early treatment significantly improves recovery rates. Vaccination is crucial, ideally starting when puppies are a few months old and repeated every two weeks. Despite high statewide cases, proactive measures, including free booster vaccines from the Petco Love Foundation, have kept Warren County’s cases under a dozen in recent months. For prevention, contact local veterinarians or humane societies for vaccination options.
